Just a little more about Barbie Beach

BARBIE IS ON THE ROAD

DONNA ROSSER  - from Barbie Beach " Don't Worry Baby "

Barbie Beach has left LaGrange. Rosser’s Barbie Beach images are on display at Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone, Georgia. There they join the Atlanta Celebrates Photography exhibit, Double Exposure. This exhibit is a partnership between Rosser and another local photographer, Dale Niles. Rosser’s focus for the ACP exhibit is the versatility of the iPhone. And now for something completely different

BARBIE BEACH & BEYOND

When I was in Georgia I went out to LaGrange Georgia to view an exhibition call  Barbie Beach & Beyond, shown at the Cochran Gallery. A two person show that will.run until October 3.
Donna Rosser and Anne Jarrell Berry who are showing a different type of work in the SlowExposures  exhibit a looser  free and fun series here.

The Walking Dead cast who film in the area have taken to dropping off zombie Barbies.
Barbie Beach is a civic blast so if you  driving on highway and 154 and 16 stop, take a look
I did and I laugh and laugh and I cried  John

Barbie Beach and Beyond

Just east of the intersection of Georgia Highways 154 and 16, on the south side of 16, lies Barbie Beach of Turin.  This small landmark has made a big splash in the community. Home/property owners constructed the patch of sand as a protest to the power company digging up part of their yard. The scenes change with the season or current event. As a child I spent many hours playing with Barbie. My collection included a convertible, airplane, camper, horses, beach house and much more. Photographing Barbie Beach brought back many fond memories of those times I spent playing with my Barbies alone and with friends. Barbie is always fun and frivolous. Barbie Beach reminds each passing motorist that life is short, let's have some fun. What is not to like about the beach and of course Barbie fits in with the beach scene quite easily. Remember, once you get the sand from Barbie Beach in your shoes, you will have to come back. The beach is the beacon to us to slow down, relax, and to recharge our batteries. The sounds of the waves lull us into a sense of pure relaxation. At the beach we forget our day-to-day cares. Both the real beach and the created Barbie Beach help us smile and see that life does not need to be so serious all of the time. A little fun, humor, and perhaps something a bit risqué is  a nice way to take a break from our daily life whether it be the real beach of by the chance of a Barbie Beach driveby.

"For whatever we lose (like a you or a me) it's always ourselves we find in the sea."

SOUTHERN TREES

" Southern trees bear a strange fruit", a line from a song by Billie Holiday for most of the time while choosing images of the south these words echoed in my mind. How could something so wonderful the (south) be a marker for pain and human evil.I love the south and I would not have left if love hadn't given me a reason and wings to  soar above it and fly away. Like most people born in the south I still get misty eyes when I think of home, yet I still see it for what it is which always makes me feel a little uneasy.

I would like to thank all the artists who made this exhibition possible and mrbennette's on ground crew Donna Rosser,Dale Niles, Anne Jarell Berry,  Marilyn Rogers and Don Miller.  This exhibition which is part of SlowExposures
will close on this Sunday evening

SUSAN WORSHAM - MARGARET WITH HUMMING BIRD VINE

This image by Susan Worsham is the one that inspired this exhibition.I saw it last fall ,I knew the flower and had seen hummingbirds sipping their nectar,All of sudden it took me back to a day when I was looking out my window thinking only of that moment (in the moment you are not thinking about it you are living) and the little faire birds flitting about.

They were the first hummingbirds I ever saw up really close and of course they were magical and the silence and green held me captive one late summer afternoon.

This spring I was asked recommend photographer for a new book about the South and this was one of the images that came immediately to mind. The simplicity of this photograph is part of its' power. It allows you to fill in the details.Susan and I met this summer and I was able to tell her about my reactions to her wedsite. She was a pleasure to be with as many of the photographs on her
site are.

Dogs were never a satisfying pet for me ,cats are good,I have had snakes and lizards which I like.but what fascinate me are birds the idea of flight " I 'll flight away ",so if I want to soar I could never have a bird as a pet.The reality destroys the idea of freedom of being able to float above the world like no other animal. The reason the caged bird sings is because he is sad.

In 1975 Brian Eno released an album entitled Another Green World, even thought there are many types of enviroments in the South, from dry to wet, It always seem so lush and green to me.

When I listen to Another Green World the sound is layered, deep , lush with texture of velvet and yet sparkling in parts you want to nap in the green

When I was a kid, loved visiting supermarkets because they had these weird little rides for a nickel you could ride up and down on Dumbo a tiger a pig or a horse, something that had a rhythm to sooth a child. I do not think these rides exist anymore. I can picture a mother looking for wet ones today before they would let there child touch one. I can not remember if they had for colored only signs,I guess they did.

What better way to see the wild and wonderful then than in books, magazines, toys the new tv Animal Kingdom  and maybe the occasional surprise of a smiling alligator."Where you least expect it "

As a child of the late forties  growing up I had little to say "there is that expression children are meant to be seen not heard "I guess the best children were those that were never heard or seen. This virtue gave certain children a special power, a knowing empathy with their world

I stayed on a small farm my grandmother had which was in the suburbs. Not really a farm but a bit of land with goats a couple turkeys a pig or two some laying hens and a rooster a garden and many fruit trees. In the city the house we lived in had pear peach and pecan trees in the backyard there was always harvesting going on.

What surprised me the most was animal husbandry and the idea of pets how can anything cage, chain, beaten, sold or be dependent be considered a friend. What kind of friendship is that? After seeing chickens killed the old fashion way I gave up eating chicken for 20 years . As I start putting this show together it became darker and darker, I dug deeper into my memories .
