It is always a bit daunting to do this post, I am usually to excited to get everything right the first time.A few minutes ago I went to correct a mistake and deleted all the text.Which I do not remember but I think it was something about withstanding the test of time. Maybe with luck I will remember it later and add it then. Besides being images that I keep around I think they relate to each other in speaking about what stays.

Occasionally I go out to see art and one of my favorite  stops this past year has been Bruce Silverstein Gallery.There you will find strong showing of contemporary artists.


I go, because Bruce has staged a number of historical exhibitions that are filled with surprises and broader gallery experiences.That idea of conversation with art the one inside.

Artists are creators with singular visions but some times without knowing their vision become part of a grander conversation. Most of the time the voices takes place in the viewer head on seeing an image and relating it to other sensations and experiences

When I first saw the work of Matthew Pillsbury I thought of Hiroshi Sugimoto, then I realize that Abelardo Morell was another influence their photographs are about waiting to catch light and shadow.
To record a single event can take hours, for example Matthew's American Idol took over 2 hours to create in the camera .To see all the details can take years.

When I think of trying to create with light and time in art, I think of these artists along with James Turrell, Dan Flavin and Richard Serra.

I recently saw some new images by James Nizam www.jamesnizam.com an artist from Vancouver represented by Gallery Jones. James' photographs extends the conversation. He has a new exhibitions entitled

Trace Heaven

I like these images so much , I will not try to explain how and why they were created sometimes words can destroy what appears magic and beautiful. I want to stand in front of the photographs and listen.

I Am In A New York State of Mind : Photographs by Susan Wides

I have lived in New York a very long time, yet I still say I am a southerner .Funny thing I never thought I would leave home even if I was a fish out of water there , I still knew how to breathe and I had a great time . As with most things in my life something serendipitous happen, love happened and I found myself in New York for a weekend. A weekend that became the beginning of a new home and many evolutions of me.

I have often said I came to New York because I love snow, that is still true. A bigger truth is, I was not thinking at all, I wanted to be here

I can sit inside my apartment and feel the energy of a living city pulsating through the bricks and mortar.I can be in a crowd here and feel quiet and stillness. I do not look for pictures of New York I am here now,but when I saw these images by Susan Wides I was drawn into her vision, I know these places , even to someone who lives here they can be strange yet beautiful and making us see that is part of what artists do.
